Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters
A recent study reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals using these drugs need to be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on combined behavioural support.
